Pre-Qualify for Benefits

There are two types of disability programs available to those that are unable to work due to a health condition. Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)

As the name indicates, the Social Security Disability Insurance pays benefits to those who have worked in the past. If you have been employed, and your employer withheld FICA from your checks, there is likely money available to you in case you have become disabled or can no longer work full time because of a health condition. To be approved for SSDI, you must:

  • Have worked at least 5 combined years in the last 10 year period.
  • Be unable to work a full-time job or make less than $1,200 per month in income.
  • Have seen a doctor for your disability.
  • Not be currently receiving Social Security disability benefits.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

For those that have limited income and resources, and do not have the work history to qualify for SSDI, SSI is available. While SSDI is an insurance program funded by taxes from working individuals, SSI is a social welfare program. To apply for Supplemental Security Income, visit the Social Security Administration’s website.
