Can You Get Unemployment and Disability Benefits at the Same Time?

disability benefits and unemployment

In most cases, receiving unemployment benefits and disabilibily benefits at the same time is not normal. This is because both of these benefit programs are created for people in different situations.

Disability benefits are for those who cannot work due to a health condition, while unemployment benefits are for those who were let go of their current job or cannot find replacement employment.

In rare cases a person may receive both, but it is not typical and could raise red flags.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) determines disability based on how much work you are able to do. Some people may receive a limited amount of disability benefits because they’re able to work some, just not full time. In this instance, if they were let go from their job, they may have a need to file for unemployment while they are actively looking for a new part-time position.

If you are unable to maintain full-time duties due to a health condition, you may want to apply for disability benefits instead. Disability benefits are paid for through taxes taken from your paycheck while working, so they are rightfully owed to you if you qualify.
